VACCINES IN CATS
Vaccinations in cats are an important part of your cat’s health. They can help prevent many of the more serious infectious diseases in cats. We recommend that kittens are vaccinated beginning at 6-8 weeks of age for FVRCP-C (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis virus, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia virus and Chlamydia). These are infectious respiratory diseases that are very contagious, even if your cat will not go outside, because they are airborne and can be carried on your shoes and clothing. This vaccine should be repeated in 3-4 weeks and annually thereafter. A Rabies vaccine should also be given annually beginning at age 6 months. An additional vaccine to consider is for Feline Leukemia Virus. This vaccine is highly recommended if your cat is going to go outdoors at all, will be boarding, or in a cat show. A blood test prior to vaccination is recommended to make sure your cat is not infected with the deadly virus. Vaccines can begin at 9 weeks and is repeated in 3-4 weeks, then annually thereafter. .
FLEA PREVENTION
Fleas are troublesome pests for both our pets and us. In the past all we could do was to treat a flea problem when it occurred with messy insecticidal sprays dips, shampoos, powders, ect. Today the name of the game is flea prevention with safer, less toxic, and easier to use products. Program is an injectable flea control that gives six months of flea control in cats. Program works by preventing the flea egg from hatching in the pet’s environment, thus effectively breaking the flea life cycle. This is a great product for those cats that are indoors. If you are using Sentinel for dogs for flea control, we recommend using Program in cats. Frontline Plus is a topical spot treatment applied monthly for fleas and ticks. Frontline kills fleas, flea eggs, and ticks on contact and is a great product for dogs or cats that go outdoors. Revolution is another topical monthly product that controls fleas, ear mites, intestinal worms, and prevents heartworms in cats. Revolution is an excellent product for those cats that go outdoors frequently and covers a broad spectrum of parasite control. Capstar is a new flea tablet that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes and will kill all the fleas in 6 hours. Capstar is a good product to quickly kill fleas if your pet becomes infested, and can be used in conjunction with the other flea control products.
If your pet does become infested with fleas, treat all pets in the household with Frontline Plus, Revolution, or Capstar as well as treating the indoor and outdoor environment. Then using one of the above products monthly can help prevent reinfestations in the future. Call our office for a flea prevention plan for you and your pet's needs. |

FELINE LEUKEMIA AND FIV TESTING
Feline Leukemia Virus and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) are two serious viruses that attack the immune system in cats. Once contracted the viruses gradually wear down the immune system until your cat can no longer fend off minor infections.Feline Leukemia virus is spread through saliva, respiratory secretions, and blood. FIV is spread primarily through blood and sexual contact. A simple in-office blood test can be done to check for these viruses in your cat. We recommend that all cats are tested when first obtained, especially if you have other cats in the household. Outside cats should be tested annually. If your cat becomes sick, we often recommend testing along with other blood tests. Cats can appear healthy and still be infected before showing clinical signs. Prevention is key in protecting your cat from these deadly viruses. Keeping your cat indoors eliminates the biggest risk of exposure provided that you do not bring an untested cat inside. Do not feed strays close to the house where your cat may come in contact accidentally through a screen, door, or window. Spaying or neutering your pet can prevent fighting, roaming, and sexual behavior that may put your cat at high risk. A vaccine is available for Feline Leukemia Virus and is recommended if your cat goes outdoors, to pet shows, or to the kennel. Call us for an appointment if your cat has not been tested for these diseases.
